From healthy skin to restful sleep—The Ayurvedic benefits of drinking milk and ghee
Ayurveda, India’s 5,000-year-old medicinal science has long established ghee as a golden healthful elixir that can help remedy all sorts of ailments, from skin irritations to upset stomachs. And boy, have we written about how beneficial ghee is for our bodies and skin! However, there is one food that we have yet to write about that can up the goodness of ghee. And that, my friends, is fresh milk from grass-fed cows. For millennia, Ayurveda has touted that there are many benefits of drinking milk and ghee. Let’s take a look at four of those benefits.
Four benefits of drinking milk and ghee
Increases metabolism and strengthens the digestive system. This is one of the most significant benefits of drinking milk and ghee. The combination of milk/ghee combo helps increase the secretion of digestive enzymes in the gut. These enzymes help break food down into smaller units so that the body can absorb the nutrients more easily. Ghee in milk also helps give a boost to the body’s metabolism and clear the gut of toxins.
Reduces joint pain. Ghee is an excellent lubricant for joints and is great at helping to reduce inflammation. The K2 in ghee helps bones absorb milk’s high calcium content, thus fortifying your body’s ability to naturally build strong bones.
Improves sleep. Ghee is a feel-good food—it helps lower stress and boost your mood. When mixed in a cup of warm milk, it is said to calm the nerves and send you into a state of sleepiness, which is why bedtime is the best time to drink milk and ghee.
Makes skin glowier. Both ghee and milk are natural moisturizers and are said to improve the skin from the inside out. Having milk and ghee every evening can hydrate and help revitalize skin from looking dull and lackluster.
Treat yourself to a bedtime treat
The great benefits of drinking milk and ghee are easy to access. For a simple milk and ghee beverage, just whisk 1 tablespoon of ghee and 1 cup of milk together in a small saucepan over medium heat until the ghee is melted and well-incorporated. However, if you’re looking for something a little fancier with a few more health benefits, you can make it a Golden Turmeric Latte. It’s easy to do!
