Four Health Benefits of Ghee That May Surprise You

Can something so tasty really be good for you? These health benefits of ghee prove that it can!

The Nectar of the Gods — or ghee as it’s more commonly known — has been revered in India for five millennia as a sacred food that nourishes and heals the body and soul. According to Ayurveda, India’s 5,000-year-old medicinal science, ghee is the best oil for the human body. It lubricates joints, optimizes skin and eye health, and has an alkalizing effect on the entire body. But this is just where the health benefits of ghee begin. Much of what Ayurvedic doctors have been touting forever Western medicine is increasingly beginning to recognize. The benefits of ghee are many and varied, but here are four health benefits we think are worth knowing.

Ghee 101

Ghee is clarified butter — a lactose-free, shelf-stable, high-heat cooking oil. To make Full Moon Ghee, we begin with butter that comes from healthy, happy Jersey cows in Western Massachusetts. We slowly simmer the butter, removing the moisture, the milk solids, and the impurities. What remains is a pure premium cooking oil: the clarified essence of butter. Our ghee has a rich, sweet, slightly nutty flavor.

Here are four health benefits of ghee you might not know!

Ghee improves digestion and is great for gut health. Ghee is chock full of butyric acid. What’s butyric acid? you ask. Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that plays a central role in gut health. It is the main source of energy for your colon cells providing them with about 70 percent of the total energy they need. Butyric acid is a mono-saturated fatty acid that reduces the seepage of undigested food particles in the gut and aids in the repair of the mucosal wall. Some studies suggest that butyric acid may offer relief to people suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Ghee is one of the highest natural sources conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a fatty acid that is associated with a long list of health benefits. Studies suggest that CLA may help reduce body fat, prevent the formation of cancer/tumor cells, alleviate inflammation, lower the amount of blood cholesterol, and improve and stabilize blood pressure. And what’s more, ghee made from grass-fed cows, like our Full Moon Ghee, contains even higher concentrations of CLA.

Ghee is an excellent source of fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamins A, D, E and K are important for improving everything from eye and skin health to boosting the immune system and aiding in the absorption of calcium. Our bodies absorb these fat-soluble vitamins best when we eat them with fatty foods, like ghee. Vitamin E is also a well-known and oft-used antioxidant that is great at repairing and protecting the skin, which is one reason ghee is also used as a moisturizing skincare product.

Ghee is loaded with omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids. Ghee from grass-fed cows contains omega fatty acids which play a number of vital roles in our bodies, particularly in our brains. These important fatty acids have been linked to brain development, reducing inflammation and slowing the aging process, among others.
